Overview

Your privacy is important to The Center for Effective Philanthropy (“CEP”), and CEP (either “we” or “us”) is committed to respecting that privacy. This Privacy Policy describes the personal information practices for websites we operate (“websites”), such as the CEP and YouthTruth websites, including what type of information is gathered and tracked, how the information is used, and with whom the information is shared.

By visiting or using any of our Websites, you are consenting to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

Note: This privacy policy applies to the website located at cep.org and to our offline practices. This online privacy policy does not apply to the websites of other companies, individuals, or organizations to which we may provide links. These websites may have different policies relating to your privacy and information they collect about you, and you should consult the privacy policies of each site you visit.

This Privacy Policy was last updated on September 27, 2018.

Personal Data

In general, you can visit the Websites without providing us any personal information about yourself.  We do, however, use cookies and track IP addresses to improve our services.

If you choose to use specific features of our Website, such as requesting to be contacted by a CEP staff member, or using the newsletter or blog subscription sign-up, the publication download function on the CEP Website, or the Get Started page on the YouthTruth Website, you will be asked to give us personal data, which will include your name, e-mail address and/or phone number, that information will be used (for example) to correspond with you, respond to your inquiry, process an order, register for a webinar or conference, or provide you with a subscription. We may ask you to provide other information, which may include your postal address and credit card number. If you enter credit card information on the Websites in connection with a purchase, that information is sent directly from your browser to the third-party service provider we use to manage credit card processing; we do not store it on our servers. The service provider is not permitted to use the information you provide except for the sole purpose of credit card processing on our behalf. We will not exchange or sell your e-mail address to third parties.

We reserve the right to disclose your personal information as required by law; when we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights; when we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to prevent physical harm or financial loss or in connection with an investigation of suspected or actual illegal activity;  to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process; or in connection with an actual or proposed corporate transaction or insolvency proceeding involving all or part of the business or asset to which the information pertains.

To use our Online Reporting System (ORS), you will need to sign in using credentials that we provide to you, and we may share the name and organization associated with those credentials, as well as other information, with third party analytic vendors as further described below.

In general, we maintain personal data only as long as necessary for the purpose for which you provided it.  You have a right to know what personal data we have that relates to you, to see a copy of that data, and to have any inaccuracies corrected.  You also have a right to have us delete your personal data if you request that we do so.  You may also withdraw your previously given consents to the use of your personal data.  You may exercise these rights by contacting our Data Protection Officer at the address below.

Information Security and Quality

The security of your personal information is important to us.  We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it.  However, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

We will make a sincere effort to respond in a timely manner to your requests to correct inaccuracies in your personal information, to remove personal information you do not want stored, or to answer any questions you may have about our use of your information.

Information Gathered through Cookies and Other Technologies

Like many websites, we use “cookies,” which are small text files that are stored on your computer or equipment when you visit certain online pages that record your preferences. We use cookies to track your use of our Websites and online services. We may also use cookies to monitor traffic, improve the Websites, and make it easier and/or relevant for your use. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies by clicking the banner on our homepage or through your own navigation browser.

Like some websites, we may also use web beacons or flash cookies. A web beacon or flash cookie (also known as an “action tag” “tracer tag,” or “single-pixel GIF”) is an invisible graphic on a web page or e-mail newsletter that is programmed to collect non-personally identifiable information about your use of a given website or newsletter, e.g., whether you opened the e-mail. Like cookies, web beacons allow CEP and its technology providers to summarize overall usage patterns for our analysis and provide personalized services to you.

If you provide personal data to us, it will be made available to our service providers (including web server, cloud storage providers, CRM provider, marketing agencies, email services, webinar services, and others) to help us deliver our services and run our business.  Such data provision is subject to privacy agreements and the providers may use your personal data solely to assist us and may not otherwise share or use it for other purposes.  Working with these providers allows us to enable specific services and functionality for which we have contracted, such as delivering our products and services, sending marketing and communications related to our business and improving our site.  These companies are authorized to use your Personally Identifiable Information only as necessary to provide these services to us and to help us provide you with personalized content, services, and recommended resources or tools you may be interested in.  We also use Google Analytics and track site usage.  Google Analytics privacy policy and related information can be found here:  https://support.google.com/analytics.

General Data Protection Regulation

The General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) is a European Regulation concerning the use and processing of personal information. We are committed to storing, using, and processing your information in compliance with the GDPR.

The Website is published in the United States and is subject to laws of the United States. If you are located in a country outside the United States and voluntarily submit personal data to us, you should be aware that that information will be transferred to the United States.  By doing so, you consent to the transfer of that information to, and/or storage of, that information in the United States.

Changes to our Privacy Policy

If we decide to change our Privacy Policy, we will post changes to this website and other places we deem appropriate so that you are aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it.  We will not, however, treat your personal data in a less restrictive manner without first contacting you and obtaining your express consent.

We reserve the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time, and such change will apply with respect to information you provide or your activity on the Websites after the change in policy, so please review it frequently.
