May 21, 2024: Philanthropy’s Promise in Challenging Times (Amsterdam)

May 21,3:30 pm - 6:30 pm

In the face of daunting challenges, from climate change to polarization, philanthropy offers the promise of positive change. So, what practices are likely to lead to the greatest positive impact and which ones will inadvertently undermine funders’ goals? How should funders work with each other, with NGOs, and with government and business to pursue change? What can be learned from research on funder practices and how they have changed since the Covid-19 pandemic prompted many to re-think their default approaches? What are the views of leaders of NGOs on what they need from funders to best pursue shared goals?

Drawing on more than two decades of research by CEP as well as work with hundreds of grantmaking institutions, CEP President Phil Buchanan, author ofGiving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count, will offer thoughts on these questions and others. Phil will discuss with grantmakers based in the Netherlands how what he shares does, or doesn’t, resonate with their experience.
