SUMMARY:How can philanthropy support grantee AI Capacity?
DESCRIPTION:During this session\, hosted by the Philanthropy Working Group at the Natural Language Processing Community of Practice (NLP-CoP)\, we will look more closely at the role of philanthropy in supporting grantee capacity to make decisions about their own internal use of AI and their integration of AI into their programming. We will start by learning more about the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s recent survey on the use of AI at Foundations and Non-Profits\, with a specific focus on findings about where nonprofits are looking for support and capacity development\, including areas of training\, expertise\, infrastructure and core support. Then we will hear from two foundations about their own capacity development initiatives and what they have learned about supporting in this area. \nWe will be joined by Elisha Smith Arrillaga (VP of Research at the Center for Effective Philanthropy)\, Lili Gangas (Chief Technology Community Officer at the Kapor Center)\, and Nick Arevalo (Capacity Building Director at Tipping Point Community).

SUMMARY:Navigating Complexity and Challenge Right Now: Nonprofits’ Needs and Funder Responses
DESCRIPTION:Nonprofits and philanthropy are operating in a new and complex environment shaped by a polarized and unpredictable political climate. As nonprofit leaders report difficulty pursuing their missions\, fears both for the communities they serve and for their financial futures\, and continued struggles with burnout and staffing\, they are asking for more from their funders. How can funders respond in this moment of complexity? What shifts in practice are called for to respond to the extraordinary challenges of the current environment? What role does listening play\, and how can funders ensure they are hearing from both nonprofits and the communities they serve? \nIn this webinar\, CEP will host a conversation informed by both CEP’s 2025 “State of Nonprofits” report\, which reveals the stark challenges nonprofits are facing in this moment\, and “Voices That Matter: How Foundations and Nonprofits Engage With the Communities They Support\,” a forthcoming report that examines the listening practices of both funders and nonprofits\, and how funders support these practices. \nPanelists: \n\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nMelinda Tuan\, Managing Director\, Fund for Shared Insight\nShelly Prichard\, President & CEO\, Wichita Community Foundation\nCandice C. Jones\, President & CEO\, Public Welfare Foundation\nGregg Croteau\, CEO\, UTEC\, Inc.\nPhil Buchanan\, President\, CEP (moderator)\n\n

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Grantee Perspectives on Intermediary Funders
DESCRIPTION:As use of and support for intermediary organizations – a term which refers to many kinds of entities that regrant philanthropic dollars – has grown in recent years\, a new CEP report reveals that grantee experiences with intermediaries are not very different from their experiences with “originating” funders. \nIn this webinar\, members of CEP’s research team will present data from this first-of-its-kind study of grantee perspectives on intermediaries before joining a conversation about the strengths and opportunities of these organizations. Moderated by Stephanie Beasley of The Chronicle of Philanthropy\, we’ll hear perspectives from both sides of the intermediary-grantee funding relationship and invite open conversation about the possibilities and limitations of funding through intermediaries. \nPanelists: \nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Ph.D.\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nEmily Yang\, Senior Analyst\, Research\, CEP\nPam Foster\, Chief Operating Officer\, Co-Impact\nJess Gutfreund\, Chief Implementation Officer\, Birth Center Equity\nMonique Miles\, Vice President\, Aspen Institute\nStephanie Beasley\, Senior Writer\, The Chronicle of Philanthropy (Moderator) \nRegister

SUMMARY:What Funders Need to Know: The State of Nonprofits and Grantee Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Nonprofits play a pivotal role in the U.S.\, often providing essential community services or taking on vexing social challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, nonprofits stepped up in vital ways\, even as they themselves faced an unprecedented period of challenge. Four years on\, how are nonprofits faring? What challenges do they face? What do funders — both institutional and individual — need to know in order to best support these crucial institutions? Relatedly\, with concern about burnout among nonprofit staff and leaders high\, how are funders approaching well-being at grantee organizations? \nIn this free webinar\, hosted in partnership with Philanthropy California\, we will examine CEP’s new report\, State of Nonprofits 2024: What Funders Need to Know\, which takes the pulse of nonprofit leaders through CEP’s nationally representative Nonprofit Voice Panel. We will also discuss findings from a forthcoming CEP Research Snapshot\, How Foundations are Supporting Grantee Staff Well-Being\, which explores how funders are perceiving and acting on issues related to the well-being and burnout of staff at their grantee organizations. \nPanelists: \nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nGloria Corral\, President and CEO\, Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE)\nTim Delaney\, President and CEO\, National Council of Nonprofits\nElizabeth (Beth) Brown\, Managing Director\, Mental Health and Well-Being\, Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation\nPhil Buchanan\, President\, CEP (moderator) \nRegister
