SUMMARY:Facing a Nonprofit Sector in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Seara Grundhoefer \nAs nonprofits face historic challenges under the current federal administration\, data collected last fall from the Center for Effective Philanthropy reveals that nonprofit organizations are concerned about their ability to continue to operate and are asking for greater support from their funders. In CEP’s new report\, “A Sector in Crisis: How U.S. Foundations and Nonprofits Are Responding to Threats\,” nearly 70% of nonprofit leaders report experiencing funding cuts\, while\, simultaneously\, 65% report experiencing greater demand for their services. As the nonprofit sector reels under these pressures\, how are nonprofits and their foundation funders responding? And what comes next? Join the Nonprofit Cooperative in a discussion with CEP on April 29th digging into these questions and sharing more about learnings from the field.

SUMMARY:Communicating Values in Volatile Times - MIND THE GAP
DESCRIPTION:How do we address the gap between nonprofits and foundations? \nFoundations and nonprofits are navigating an increasingly volatile environment and determining how best to connect with audiences and maintain commitments to serving the public good. Despite the many values we hold in common and the staggering need for our services\, the gap between nonprofits and foundations is widening. \nComNetwork SF Bay Area\, a local chapter of the Communications Network\, is gathering foundation and nonprofit leaders to share how mission-driven leaders working in communications are approaching their messaging and building resilience when the principles and people fundamental to social change work are under attack. \nWe invite you to join us for “Mind the Gap\,” the third event in our Communicating Values in Volatile Times series in San Francisco on April 16\, 2026 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm\, with an informal reception afterwards from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. The first part of the event will feature a conversation between Dwayne Marsh\, President and CEO of Northern California Grantmakers (NCG)\, Glen Galaich\, CEO of the Stupski Foundation\, and Seara Grundhoefer\, Senior Analyst for Research at the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP). \nCEP recently released a report called A Sector in Crisis identifying the startling gapbetween what nonprofit organizations say they need during these times and how foundations think about their role in helping nonprofits to navigate this moment. The speakers will briefly discuss the report’s findings\, their perspectives on what is happening in the field\, and what they are hearing and seeing from their respective partners and members. Their remarks will be followed by discussion of how foundations and nonprofits are communicating their values\, and participants will delve into possibilities for greater alignment within the social sector. \nThis event is organized by Regan Douglass of Sparkwise Communications and Minna Jung of RALLY. It is hosted by RALLY\, the Stupski Foundation\, and ComNetwork SF Bay Area\, serving hundreds of professionals using the power of communications to advance positive change in the world. It is free to attend\, and attendees do not need to be members of The Communications Network. \nEVENT DETAILS: Communicating Values in Volatile Times – MIND THE GAP \nWHEN: Thursday\, April 16\, 2026. Presentations and discussion will be from 2:30 – 4:00 pm\, followed by a social hour with drinks and light eats. \nWHERE: Stupski Foundation\, 90 New Montgomery Street\, Suite 1100\, San Francisco \nWHO: Event brought to you by ComNetwork SF Bay Area\, RALLY\, and Sparkwise Communications with space generously provided by Stupski Foundation. \nRSVP/REGISTER HERE! \nThis is an in-person event only (no remote option). Advance registration is required. We will send additional details about the program and format to all registered attendees. If you have specific questions about the event\, please reach out to Regan Douglass at sparkwisecommunications@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:AI With Purpose: Philanthropy's View of AI Use
DESCRIPTION:The AI revolution is upon us. It’s in the news and in the ether\, with emerging news reports and stories on a daily basis. Nonprofits and foundation staff are using AI tools on the regular\, but is our sector prepared? Are we ready to address the promise and the perils of this burgeoning technology? \nLast year\, the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) released AI With Purpose: How Foundations and Nonprofits Are Thinking About and Using Artificial Intelligence\, providing comprehensive insights comparing AI use and views in philanthropy and nonprofits to date. The study aims to understand foundations’ and nonprofits’ understandings of\, attitudes toward\, and engagement with AI — and what role equity plays in these decisions. This study also provides valuable insights into the role of the sector in the changing AI landscape. \nJoin us for a discussion around CEP’s report as they highlight pertinent findings and share more about their learnings regarding the field and its readiness when it comes to the use of AI. CEP will then provide resources and recommendations for those who are interested in investing in AI coalitions. We’ll also hear from a panel of funders who are engaged in AI work\, as well as those who are more nascent to the conversation\, as they share how they’re navigating AI in the field. \nSpeakers:\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\nVice President\, Research\nThe Center for Effective Philanthropy \nLul Tesfai\nshe/her\nDirector of Program Development\nThe James Irvine Foundation \nAlberto Ortega Hinojosa\nData and Insights Officer\nThe David and Lucile Packard Foundation \nKarely Ordaz Salto\nshe/her\nDirector of CEO Affairs\nThe San Francisco Foundation \n \n

SUMMARY:How can philanthropy support grantee AI Capacity?
DESCRIPTION:During this session\, hosted by the Philanthropy Working Group at the Natural Language Processing Community of Practice (NLP-CoP)\, we will look more closely at the role of philanthropy in supporting grantee capacity to make decisions about their own internal use of AI and their integration of AI into their programming. We will start by learning more about the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s recent survey on the use of AI at Foundations and Non-Profits\, with a specific focus on findings about where nonprofits are looking for support and capacity development\, including areas of training\, expertise\, infrastructure and core support. Then we will hear from two foundations about their own capacity development initiatives and what they have learned about supporting in this area. \nWe will be joined by Elisha Smith Arrillaga (VP of Research at the Center for Effective Philanthropy)\, Lili Gangas (Chief Technology Community Officer at the Kapor Center)\, and Nick Arevalo (Capacity Building Director at Tipping Point Community).

SUMMARY:Navigating Uncertain Times: What is Philanthropy’s Role?
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of significant funding shifts on the federal level\, philanthropic investment has never been more important. The philanthropic sector is uniquely positioned to take bold\, timely action to address some of the impacts that revised funding streams will have on nonprofits – we can be flexible\, move nimbly and take risks that others can’t.  \nECCF\, Rockland Trust and Tower Foundation invite institutional funders\, private foundations and individual or family philanthropists to discuss the role that philanthropy can play in this moment and share perspectives on how funders can support grantees and each other through these uncertain times.  \nThe Funders Summit will include an overview discussion led by Phil Buchanan\, President of The Center for Effective Philanthropy\, followed by two interactive breakout sessions that will dig deeper into acute and long-term funding challenges\, innovations and opportunities that funders see despite the challenges\, and the varying levels of risk that funders encounter as they continue to meet their philanthropic goals and advance the issues they care about most. \n \n

SUMMARY:Orr Group TALKS: The Impact of MacKenzie Scott’s Transformational Giving
DESCRIPTION:With the release of the third and final report in the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s (CEP) three-year study\, “Breaking the Mold: The Transformative Effect of MacKenzie Scott’s Big Gifts“\, we now have a comprehensive look at the impact of MacKenzie Scott’s transformational philanthropy. SUMMARY:BREAKING THE MOLD: The Transformative Effect of MacKenzie Scott's Big Gifts
DESCRIPTION:MacKenzie Scott has now given more than $19 billion away in less than five years. Her unique approach to philanthropy — featuring large\, unrestricted gifts with minimal reporting requirements — has challenged traditional grantmaking norms and raised questions about the impact of this approach on nonprofits and the communities they serve. Join us for an in-depth discussion about the impact and implications of Scott’s giving for nonprofits and philanthropy\, featuring findings from the third and final report in The Center for Effective Philanthropy’s (CEP) comprehensive three-year study. The new report analyzes survey responses from hundreds of nonprofit and foundation leaders as well as financial data from both Scott grant recipients and comparable nonprofits. CEP is simultaneously releasing a compendium of seven in-depth stories from nonprofit recipients themselves\, revealing an inside look at the impact of receiving a gift from Scott. On this free webinar\, we’ll examine how Scott’s nonprofit recipients have fared financially\, whether they have experienced “funding cliffs” or difficulty fundraising\, and evidence of impact on organizations\, programs\, and leaders. We’ll also discuss foundation leaders’ perceptions of her influence on their practices and what lessons might be drawn from her approach. Following a presentation of the findings\, a panel discussion will feature a nonprofit leader that received Scott funding\, a foundation leader\, and the leader of Lever for Change\, the organization administering Scott’s Yield Giving program. \nPanelists:\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nAnn Stern\, President and CEO\, Houston Endowment\nCecilia Conrad\, CEO\, Lever for Change\nKimberly Lewis\, President and CEO\, Goodwill Industries of East Texas\nPhil Buchanan\, President\, CEP (moderator)

SUMMARY:SXSW "Counted Out" Screening & Q&A (Elisha Smith Arrillaga on panel)
DESCRIPTION:Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time—political polarization\, racial and economic inequity\, global pandemic and climate change–through an unexpected lens: math. \nIn our current information economy\, math is everywhere. The people we date\, the news we see\, the influence of our votes\, the candidates who win elections\, the education we have access to\, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand\, or even notice. But whether we know it or not\, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math\, and how well—is a critical determinant of social and economic power. \nThrough a mosaic of personal stories\, expert interviews\, and scenes of math transformation in action\, Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people”? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where anyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it? \nThe film is dedicated to Bob Moses\, the civil rights leader and MacArthur genius who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time\, and whose work we follow in some of the last filmed interviews of his life. \nPanel:\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\nThe Center For Effective Philanthropy \nVicki Abeles\nReel Link Films \nIsmar Volic\nInstitute for Mathematics and Democracy

SUMMARY:Philanthropy Northwest Annual Conference PNW24
DESCRIPTION:BREAKOUT SESSION: FUNDING NONPROFIT ENDOWMENTS AS AN EQUITY STRATEGY\nFunding nonprofit endowments can ensure the stability of an organization as well as advance equity and shift power to frontline organizations. However\, little is known about the degree to which foundations engage in funding nonprofit endowments or about attitudes of foundation leaders on this topic. This session will inform discussions in the philanthropic space about endowment grantmaking\, including the role endowments can play in promoting equity. The Center for Effective Philanthropy and The Bridgespan Group will share results from two recent studies examining funder perspectives on and practices regarding nonprofit endowments. \nSPEAKERS:\nEmily Yang\nThe Center for Effective Philanthropy \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Grantee Perspectives on Intermediary Funders
DESCRIPTION:As use of and support for intermediary organizations – a term which refers to many kinds of entities that regrant philanthropic dollars – has grown in recent years\, a new CEP report reveals that grantee experiences with intermediaries are not very different from their experiences with “originating” funders. \nIn this webinar\, members of CEP’s research team will present data from this first-of-its-kind study of grantee perspectives on intermediaries before joining a conversation about the strengths and opportunities of these organizations. Moderated by Stephanie Beasley of The Chronicle of Philanthropy\, we’ll hear perspectives from both sides of the intermediary-grantee funding relationship and invite open conversation about the possibilities and limitations of funding through intermediaries. \nPanelists: \nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Ph.D.\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nEmily Yang\, Senior Analyst\, Research\, CEP\nPam Foster\, Chief Operating Officer\, Co-Impact\nJess Gutfreund\, Chief Implementation Officer\, Birth Center Equity\nMonique Miles\, Vice President\, Aspen Institute\nStephanie Beasley\, Senior Writer\, The Chronicle of Philanthropy (Moderator) \nRegister
