SUMMARY:SXSW "Counted Out" Screening & Q&A (Elisha Smith Arrillaga on panel)
DESCRIPTION:Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time—political polarization\, racial and economic inequity\, global pandemic and climate change–through an unexpected lens: math. \nIn our current information economy\, math is everywhere. The people we date\, the news we see\, the influence of our votes\, the candidates who win elections\, the education we have access to\, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand\, or even notice. But whether we know it or not\, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math\, and how well—is a critical determinant of social and economic power. \nThrough a mosaic of personal stories\, expert interviews\, and scenes of math transformation in action\, Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people”? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where anyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it? \nThe film is dedicated to Bob Moses\, the civil rights leader and MacArthur genius who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time\, and whose work we follow in some of the last filmed interviews of his life. \nPanel:\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\nThe Center For Effective Philanthropy \nVicki Abeles\nReel Link Films \nIsmar Volic\nInstitute for Mathematics and Democracy

SUMMARY:Philanthropy Northwest Annual Conference PNW24
DESCRIPTION:BREAKOUT SESSION: FUNDING NONPROFIT ENDOWMENTS AS AN EQUITY STRATEGY\nFunding nonprofit endowments can ensure the stability of an organization as well as advance equity and shift power to frontline organizations. However\, little is known about the degree to which foundations engage in funding nonprofit endowments or about attitudes of foundation leaders on this topic. This session will inform discussions in the philanthropic space about endowment grantmaking\, including the role endowments can play in promoting equity. The Center for Effective Philanthropy and The Bridgespan Group will share results from two recent studies examining funder perspectives on and practices regarding nonprofit endowments. \nSPEAKERS:\nEmily Yang\nThe Center for Effective Philanthropy \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Grantee Perspectives on Intermediary Funders
DESCRIPTION:As use of and support for intermediary organizations – a term which refers to many kinds of entities that regrant philanthropic dollars – has grown in recent years\, a new CEP report reveals that grantee experiences with intermediaries are not very different from their experiences with “originating” funders. \nIn this webinar\, members of CEP’s research team will present data from this first-of-its-kind study of grantee perspectives on intermediaries before joining a conversation about the strengths and opportunities of these organizations. Moderated by Stephanie Beasley of The Chronicle of Philanthropy\, we’ll hear perspectives from both sides of the intermediary-grantee funding relationship and invite open conversation about the possibilities and limitations of funding through intermediaries. \nPanelists: \nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Ph.D.\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nEmily Yang\, Senior Analyst\, Research\, CEP\nPam Foster\, Chief Operating Officer\, Co-Impact\nJess Gutfreund\, Chief Implementation Officer\, Birth Center Equity\nMonique Miles\, Vice President\, Aspen Institute\nStephanie Beasley\, Senior Writer\, The Chronicle of Philanthropy (Moderator) \nRegister

SUMMARY:SCG's 2024 Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:We are entering a unique moment in Southern California. While the nation and the world feel increasingly divided\, there is growing global interest in the economic\, environmental\, and cultural potential of our region. Major sporting events coming to Los Angeles\, including the 2026 World Cup\, the 2027 Super Bowl\, and the 2028 Olympics and Summer Paralympics\, are harbingers of the role our region must play as a leader working to solve complex problems from housing and homelessness to climate change and disaster mitigation. \nThere are tremendous opportunities ahead for our region. All of us working across sectors—philanthropy\, government\, corporate\, and community-based organizations—have vital roles to play. But we can’t go about it alone. Now\, more than ever\, we need partnership. Because when we work together\, we work better. \nSCG’s 2024 Annual Conference\, Better Together: Creating a Collective Legacy\, will explore how our sector can leverage this pivotal moment for the long-term benefit of our communities. We will discuss how forging a legacy of equity and prosperity for our region will require us to deepen our relationships and return to fundamental questions about collaboration: How do we build community and trust between ourselves and our partners? Do we have systems of accountability and care amongst one another? What does it mean to be a thriving\, interdependent region with shared values and vision? \nWe hope you will join SCG’s signature annual event to learn about the critical issues our sector will grapple with in the years ahead\, the consequences of the impending November elections\, and the strategies needed to ensure a lasting impact in Southern California. Together\, we will explore the potential of philanthropy to leverage global moments in service of regional movements and progress. \nSeara Grundhoefer\, Analyst\, Research will be speaking.

SUMMARY:What Funders Need to Know: The State of Nonprofits and Grantee Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Nonprofits play a pivotal role in the U.S.\, often providing essential community services or taking on vexing social challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, nonprofits stepped up in vital ways\, even as they themselves faced an unprecedented period of challenge. Four years on\, how are nonprofits faring? What challenges do they face? What do funders — both institutional and individual — need to know in order to best support these crucial institutions? Relatedly\, with concern about burnout among nonprofit staff and leaders high\, how are funders approaching well-being at grantee organizations? \nIn this free webinar\, hosted in partnership with Philanthropy California\, we will examine CEP’s new report\, State of Nonprofits 2024: What Funders Need to Know\, which takes the pulse of nonprofit leaders through CEP’s nationally representative Nonprofit Voice Panel. We will also discuss findings from a forthcoming CEP Research Snapshot\, How Foundations are Supporting Grantee Staff Well-Being\, which explores how funders are perceiving and acting on issues related to the well-being and burnout of staff at their grantee organizations. \nPanelists: \nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Vice President\, Research\, CEP\nGloria Corral\, President and CEO\, Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE)\nTim Delaney\, President and CEO\, National Council of Nonprofits\nElizabeth (Beth) Brown\, Managing Director\, Mental Health and Well-Being\, Arthur M. DESCRIPTION:Join us: What does the Supreme Court decision mean for foundations and nonprofits? \nThe U.S. Supreme Court’s cases of Students for Fair Admissions\, Inc. (“SFFA”) v. University of North Carolina and SFFA v. President and Fellows of Harvard College ruled that race-based affirmative action in higher education violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. \nWhat does and doesn’t this mean for foundations\, donors\, and nonprofit organizations? The questions to consider are complex and offer varied opinions. Join us as we hear from leading foundation and nonprofit experts who share what this opinion means for foundations\, donors\, nonprofit organizations\, and the community. \nTogether\, we will share and dialogue how these rulings may be impacting our thinking and grantmaking.  Bring your thoughts\, concerns\, opportunities\, and actions to share in this safe space for dialogue and collaboration. \nSpecial Guest Speakers: \n\nElisha Smith Arrillaga\, Vice President for Research\, Center for Effective Philanthropy\nBeth Chandler\, President & CEO\, YW Boston\n\nWe hope you can join us and stay for our networking lunch!
