Cambridge, MA — The Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) has elected Girls Inc. President and CEO Stephanie Hull to join its Board of Directors. Hull will begin a three-year term on January 1, 2021.

Hull has a long career as a leader in education and as a women’s advocate. Since May 2019, she has led Girls Inc., a national nonprofit that provides programming to more than 134,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada and advocates for policy and culture change to improve the conditions in which all girls are growing up. Under Hull’s leadership, the Girls Inc. network has expanded into new high-need communities and developed new partnerships with schools to bring its proven programming experience to more girls, ensuring that they have the resources and opportunities to thrive.

“Stephanie has decades of experience in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector and a deep understanding of the challenges operating nonprofits face,” said Phil Buchanan, president of CEP. “She is among the wisest nonprofit leaders I have had the privilege to know and I am eager to work with her in the years ahead.”

Prior to joining Girls Inc., Hull served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (recently renamed The Institute for Citizens and Scholars). Prior to that, she was head of the Brearley School, an all-girls school in New York City, and was also a member of the faculty and administration at Mount Holyoke College and Dartmouth College.

She is a board member of the Professional Children’s School; Code Nation, which equips students in under-resourced high schools with the skills needed for careers in technology; and Humanity in Action, an international nonprofit that educates and connects young people who seek to become leaders on issues related to human and minority rights. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and B.A. from Wellesley College.

“At this moment, the importance of best practice in philanthropy is more apparent than ever,” said Hull. “Given the urgent and increasing calls upon funding entities to solve mounting challenges with finite dollars, it’s an honor to join this Board and crucial conversation.”

Hull joins a Board that includes: Chair Grant Oliphant (President, the Heinz Endowments), Paul Beaudet (Executive Director, Wilburforce Foundation), Phil Buchanan (ex officio, President, CEP), Kathleen Cravero (Former President, Oak Foundation), Tiffany Cooper Gueye (Chief Operating Officer, Blue Meridian Partners, Inc.), Richard Ober (President and CEO, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation), Hilary Pennington (Executive Vice President for Program, Ford Foundation), Christy Pichel (former President, Stuart Foundation), Anthony Richardson (Executive Director, Nord Family Foundation), Vince Stehle (Executive Director, Media Impact Funders), Kelvin Taketa (Senior Fellow, Hawai’i Community Foundation), and Fay Twersky (Vice President, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation).
