Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Ph.D. to Lead CEP’s Research Team
CEP is delighted that philanthropic and education leader Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Ph.D. will join us as our new vice president of research starting June 1. Smith Arrillaga brings a wealth of experience as a nonprofit leader and philanthropic expert and is deeply familiar with CEP’s work.
Before joining CEP, Smith Arrillaga served as a faculty fellow and professor of practice in philanthropy and education policy at the University of Texas and as founder of Student Success Solutions, an education consulting firm. She previously held the role of managing director of the Dana Center at the University of Texas and executive director of Education Trust West. Earlier in her career, Smith Arrillaga served as director in the Career Ladders Project at the Foundation for California Community Colleges, the first fellow at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and a director at Mathematica Policy Research.

CEP Presents New Research: State of Nonprofits in 2023
Mark your calendars for July 11th, 2pm ET/11am PT! CEP will host a webinar to share the findings of new research, to be released in late June, State of Nonprofits 2023: What Funders Need to Know, as well as a preview of an additional forthcoming report. During the webinar, CEP presenters will share the results of survey responses from nonprofit leaders participating in CEP’s Nonprofit Voice Project in early 2023 and new analyses of CEP’s Grantee Perception Report (GPR) data based on thousands of nonprofit experiences. CEO of Headwaters Foundation Brenda Solorzano and CEO and president of Hopewell Shaheer Mustafa will then join the panel to discuss the key challenges facing nonprofits as they grapple with the continued impact of three years of upheaval.

YouthTruth Releases New Research
Students Weigh In, Part IV: Learning and Well-Being After COVID-19
The fourth and final report in YouthTruth’s Student’s Weigh In series on COVID-19’s impact on students provides insight into the student experience in the 2022-2023 school year, with feedback from more than 88,000 students. The data reveals that while student perceptions of learning and belonging have returned to pre-pandemic levels, there are concerning differences across student demographic groups. In addition, students’ experiences with mental health — and the level of support they receive from adults in school — worsened during the pandemic and has not recovered.
Class of 2023: Who Plans to Go to College?
This report follows up on research done in both 2019 and 2022 seeking insight into how students are planning for their future. The report reveals new insights about how seniors are thinking about college post-pandemic. In particular, it delves into a gap between students’ desire to go to college and whether they actually expect to go and includes sobering insights about men/boys and students of color.
