Nonprofit Needs — and Funder Responses — in a Shifting Context
CEP’s recent report, “Challenging Times: How U.S. Nonprofit Leaders are Experiencing the Political Context,” is a rapid-response report based on a nationally representative survey of nonprofits. The report describes the challenges faced by nonprofits and sheds light on what nonprofit leaders need now from their funders.

In addition, contributors to CEP’s blog have shared insight and advice on how funders can shape their responses to the current moment:
From CEP President Phil Buchanan:
- The imperative of “Standing Strong for DEI,”
- “How Funders Can Respond to an Unprecedented Threat to Nonprofits,” and
- The assumptions funders should reconsider in their approach to the current context.
- In a piece co-authored with colleagues Molly Heidemann and Kevin Bolduc, a look at the “wave forming” of funder responses, offering examples to those considering how to act now.
“We need the people who support us financially to make it clear they have our back even in a turbulent political climate.” Read more about what nonprofit leaders say they need from their funders right now in a post from “Challenging Times” report author Ellie Buteau.
“I hope that the strong voices and statements like those I mentioned above can coalesce into more collective action…” Kevin Bolduc reflects on philanthropy’s response so far and offers a vision for a stronger response from the sector.
Guest contributors to the CEP blog Britt Lake and Melinda Tuan grapple with the conundrum funders face of “adapting slowly or not at all … or moving so quickly that they risk making hasty decisions…” Their solution? Cut through the chaos using listening as a guide.
YouthTruth Vice President David McKinney shares an optimistic vision of the future despite the considerable challenges as he encourages funders to“use this moment to support long-term resilience…”
