January 22, 2020: A Funder Conversation with Phil Buchanan – Norwalk

January 22,9:00 am - 10:30 am

Join the Fairfield County Funders Network for a conversation with Phil Buchanan about the power and perils of philanthropy. This program is open to staff and trustees of grantmaking organizations as well as philanthropic advisors. When philanthropy is both under increasing pressure and scrutiny and perhaps more crucial than ever in a moment of political upheaval and uncertainty, Phil explores a number of questions about philanthropic practice:

How should foundations and donors approach giving?

What does it take to be effective and earn the trust of those who donors seek to help?

How can donors mitigate the power dynamics between them and those they fund?

How is giving like or unlike investing?

Should nonprofits be encouraged to act “like business?”

These are among the questions we’ll explore in this session with Phil Buchanan, author of the newly released book, Giving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count. Called a “must-read for those who really want to make a difference” by Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson, Giving Done Right is, in the words of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation president and CEO Richard Ober, “grounded in data, animated by real stories well told, and provocative in ways that shed more light than heat.” The first 25 registrants will receive a free copy of Giving Done Right (one book per organization). Breakfast will be provided.
