March 7, 2024: How Foundations are Responding to the Supreme Court Affirmative Action Rulings

March 7,2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

Free

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 2023 rulings against university policies that take race directly into account for admissions, there was concern that the changes would discourage philanthropic efforts to support racial equity. To find out how foundations are responding to the decisions, CEP surveyed and interviewed foundation leaders about their outlook and plans. In this webinar, we will discuss the findings of this research, which represents a snapshot in time, revealing that while responding foundations were discussing the rulings, few planned to make changes, and some are, in fact, leaning into racial equity work more deeply.

Co-hosted by Philanthropy New York, members of CEP’s research team will present the data, followed by a discussion about implications of the Supreme Court decision, philanthropic responses then and now, and how leaders at grantmaking, higher education, and equity-focused organizations are currently shaping their responses to the shifting landscape.

Panelists and speakers:

Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Vice President, Research, CEP

Raquiba LaBrie, Vice President of Programs, San Francisco Foundation

Eloy Ortiz Oakley, President and CEO, College Futures Foundation

Akilah Watkins, President and CEO, Independent Sector
