COMING SOON – Giving Big: The Impact of Large, Unrestricted Gifts on Nonprofits

Look for the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s new research, out Nov. 15, on the impact of the large, unrestricted gifts that have made MacKenzie Scott’s approach to giving remarkable. The forthcoming report represents the first in a three-year study that will examine the impacts of Scott’s giving as well as the ways in which nonprofit recipients have used those grants — and why — and probe any unintended consequences of the sizeable gifts.

In addition, CEP will host a webinar on Nov. 15 to present the results of the study and invite discussion from leaders of organizations that have received Scott’s grants as well as funders of the study. Moderated by CEP’s Phil Buchanan, the webinar will feature:

  • Ellie Buteau, Director of Research Projects and Special Advisor on Research Methodology and Analysis, Center for Effective Philanthropy
  • Stephanie Gillis, Director of Impact-Driven Philanthropy Initiative, Raikes Foundation
  • Kyra Kyles, Chief Executive Officer, YR Media
  • Lysa Ratliff, Chief Executive Officer, KABOOM!

Listen to Giving Done Right Season 3

The third season of the Giving Done Right podcast is well underway, and this season’s guests have shared their unique stories and fascinating insights, and have challenged conventional wisdom about how — and how much — to give. So far, hosts Phil Buchanan and Grace Nicolette have chatted with:

  • Gladys Vega, executive director of La Colaborativa, about the value of working closely with and from within communities.
  • Patty McIlreavy, president and CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, about the need to approach disaster funding with equity in mind, as well as the role of funding for both prevention and recovery.
  • Philanthropist and restaurateur April Tam Smith about her and her husband’s radically generous approach to giving and her nonprofit restaurant in the heart of Times Square.
  • Allison Sesso, president and CEO of RIP Medical Debt, about the enormous problem of medical debt in the U.S. and the false stigma that nonprofits are stale and uninventive.
  • Author and activist Heather McGhee about the racial zero sum lie and how it cuts across issues donors care about as well as her reasons for feeling optimistic about the future of racial equity work.
  • Philanthropists Vinh and Leisle Chung share their unique stories as first beneficiaries of giving and now generous donors themselves, and how they orient their medical practice around philanthropic impact.

He discusses the significant shifts in philanthropic practice in recent years before bringing to the fore seven of the most significant questions the sector faces now, including whether those shifts in practice will continue to be implemented, whether philanthropy’s commitments to racial equity will persist or fade in the face of backlash, and if philanthropy can counter threats to democracy, step up to the challenge of climate change, and more.
